The Indiana Department of Transportation released an update regarding the 421 Forward project expected to impact Zionsville and the Boone County area through 2026.

The department stated that the proposed 421 Forward project is currently in the middle of a critical phase as the teams analyze traffic through a traffic study that is intended to help inform the future design of the roadway. The traffic study allows for engineers to evaluate the current day traffic and expected performance of traffic into the future.

The design team is also currently taking into consideration the future growth of traffic related to population growth and planned developments in the surrounding Boone County area.

Once the traffic study is completed by the team, the project will develop into the design phase, which is anticipated to last through 2026 according to the department.

Throughout the upcoming year, the design team led by American Structurepoint is anticipated to conduct analyses of the accident data, traffic counts and environmental elements.

According to the department, the team is coordinating with Zionsville and Boone County officials to formulate recommended improvements for US 421 between Greenfield Road or Templin Road and County Road 300 South.

The department stated that a draft environmental document for the project is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2025.
