Columbus, Ohio – The City of Green, Ohio, and American Structurepoint have earned a National Recognition Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) in the 2025 Engineering Excellence Awards for the Massillon Road Roundabouts project.

American Structurepoint engineers designed two multilane roundabouts to replace traditional signal-controlled intersections at Boettler Road and Corporate Woods Circle/Thorn Drive. This innovative solution enhanced driver and pedestrian safety, improved traffic flow, and eased congestion in a high-traffic area.

“We are proud to have partnered with the City of Green to design and deliver these roundabouts to help improve safety and mobility in the area,” - American Structurepoint Vice President Ed Kagel

“We are proud to have partnered with the City of Green to design and deliver these roundabouts to help improve safety and mobility in the area,” said American Structurepoint Vice President Ed Kagel.

The two-block section of Massillon Road is the city's busiest, with over 24,000 vehicles driving through daily. American Structurepoint's traffic analysis showed Massillon Road would need to be widened to 9 lanes for a traditional intersection improvement project.

Roundabouts are a proven way to slow traffic and eliminate severe accidents that happen at traditional intersections. The free-flowing nature of roundabouts also helps traffic move more efficiently throughout the corridor. Opting for the roundabout solution saved the city approximately $1.2 million in costs related to right-of-way, land acquisition, construction, and future maintenance.

Project improvements include new sidewalks and crosswalks on both sides of Massillon Road to promote multimodal travel and improve pedestrian connectivity. New underground utility duct banks, designed to reduce overhead utility clutter, enhance the corridor’s aesthetic appeal. Distinctive landscaping at each roundabout’s center circle fosters a sense of place and strengthens community identity along the corridor.
