Downtown Smart Street Initiative

American Structurepoint’s landscape architects integrated a series of urban design amenities along two of the major corridors in downtown South Bend. As a component of the “Smart Streets Initiative,” a palette of materials, plantings, and pedestrian amenities were used to create linear green spaces within downtown that are not only visually stunning but also functional for all users. An important part of the project was selecting the right palette of materials and amenities that complemented South Bend and the community. After collaborating with the client, our team selected decorative pavers, lighting, bollards, custom pavement markings, wayfinding signage, pedestrian furniture, and plantings. To accompany this phase of the project, a Streetscape Pattern book was created that documented the materials, installation methods, and manufacturers of all streetscape amenities.
